FALMOUTH TOWN 2
ST IVES TOWN 1
WITH yet another bare squad, Falmouth Town showed plenty of fighting qualities to defeat St Ives Town 2-1 in the Jolly's Combination League.
What made the result all the more impressive was the fact that they came from behind to do it and then fended off late pressure to hold on for victory.
The visitors dominated the first half, but for all their possession they did not threaten the goal on too many occasions as Town defended well with young goalkeeper Tom Thorpe excelling in goal.
Despite not enjoying too much possession, Town had their moments and looked dangerous on the break.
Brian Hawke got away but failed to hit the target and Dave Rogers' speed took him clear only to be denied a goal by the feet of the goalkeeper.
Town began the second half in much better form, but suffered a blow when Matt Roberts was penalised for handball in the box. Thorpe superbly saved Darren Steadman's spotkick, but the striker pounced to knock in the rebound.
Manager Gary Pascoe had to come on in the 65th minute to replace the injured Kayne Trevaskis and that appeared to change the face of the game.
Town pushed forward in numbers and had their reward in the 75th minute when they snapped up an equaliser through Luke Wort who curled in a great free kick.
With the game in the last minute of normal time, Pascoe fed Hawke just outside Town's penalty area, and after a superb run he got into the visiting box but had his shirt pulled as he unloaded his shot. The referee spotted it and awarded a penalty from which Wort made no mistake.
St Ives piled on the pressure in injury time and went very close to snatching an equaliser from set pieces, but Town held on to claim a hard-earned victory.
