THE annual clash between The Cornish and the Rest of the World at Budock Vean Golf Club on Sunday saw the "Pasty Trophy" safely retained by the "locals" who performed well against a team that looked threatening on paper.
The emphatic five matches to one scoreline reflected how much the Cornish like their pasty!
Club captain Barry Williams and his partner Roger Mildren led the way by winning comfortably, 4 and 3 and David Gudzij and David Penrose quickly followed them into the clubhouse by also playing superbly to win by 3 and1.
Brian Martin and Nick Bryant left it late before winning one up before the "Rest" put their solitary point on the board through Rob Gibson and Peter Dinham who played brilliantly to win by 3 and 1.
With news filtering back that the "Rest of the World" had run up the white flag in the far corner of the course, following a fine 5 and 4 win by Richard Whatmore and Chris Mason, it was left to Mike O' Hara and Andrew Varney to polish things off by winning their match 2 and 1.
Following the match everyone enjoyed a pasty kindly supplied with compliments of West Cornwall Pasty Company (Ken Kocking) and the entry fees were donated to the Children's Hospice South West charity.
On Wednesday the ladies donated all their entry money to the Cancer Spoon charity. The event was won by Shirley Mildren with a splendid 38 Stableford points. She also donated her birdie money to the charity. Runner up was Mae Brown with 36 points and third was Tricia Blatter with 35 points.
Shirley Mildren recently became the second player from Budock Vean to be asked to represent the club in the National HSBC finals after achieving one of the highest qualifying scores in the country. Tom Hunt previously achieved this distinction two years ago. Shirley and her husband Roger Mildren are no strangers to winning and they recently won the Married Couples knockout competition with a superb performance in the final to take the trophy for a record fifth time.
This Sunday the International Pairs four ball better ball takes place and is open to gents and ladies in any combination.
The winners will take their place in Scotland where they will be one round from this year's grand final at Carnoustie. Last year's representatives Keith Rashleigh and Richard Burton missed the grand final at St Andrews on countback, so the club are hoping this year's winners can go one better.
