WHILST it was disappointing to lose to Wadebridge Camels on Saturday, there were, nevertheless, very promising signs from a young Penryn side.

The forwards have performed well in all three league games to date, but at last very noticeable improvements are appearing in the backs, and the Borough scored their first try of the season, an excellent move finished off by Andrew Seviour in the left corner.

The game began very evenly, but Camels began to show how well they have developed when, in the 12th minute, a well-worked move led to a try by right wing Alistair MacLennan. Fly half Mark Trevarthen had no problems with the conversion and the visitors were seven points up.

But it did not stay that way for long. The Borough were immediately back on the attack and four minutes later were awarded a penalty which Taron Peacock had no difficulty in converting to reduce the arrears to four points.

The Borough's luck ran out again when Wadebridge ran in their second try wide out, but the home side came back with a second penalty goal to limit the visitors to a six point lead at half time.

The second half started with all out pressure from the Borough, and they were unlucky not to score when Alan Richards crossed after a good three's movement. Unfortunately the touch judge indicated that Chris Mann had a foot in touch before he passed to Richards and Wadebridge were let off the hook.

The game remained even, with each pack striving to gain the ascendancy until in the 72nd minute the visiting forwards drove over the line for an unconverted try, to give them a 17-6 lead.

But Penryn were not beaten yet; after a good threes move Andrew Seviour, who had come on to replace the injured Taron Peacock, scored a try in the left hand corner. The conversation attempt failed but with only two minutes to go The Borough were back in the game. Unfortunately an infringement led to a Camels penalty goal right on time to give Wadebridge a win by 20 points to 11, but Penryn's youthful team are improving game by game and that first elusive win cannot be far away.

In spite of losing three games in Western Counties West, Penryn have moved up a place in the league. This is because they have a better points difference than either Withycombe or Minehead Barbarians.

It is early in the season but it must be remembered that only two teams will be relegated from Western Counties West to Cornwall and Devon.

Penryn travel to Minehead on October 20 and Withycombe on November 10, with the return home fixtures on December 15 (Withycombe) and January 26 (Minehead), but before that there are difficult games versus Devonport Services (A), Ivybridge (H) and Bude (A) in the RFU senior Vase Cup competition, with Bude again, this time at home, in the league on October 27.

Wadebridge Camels II 54pts Penryn Saracens 7pts The Saracens' tackling let them down in this game. After such a hard tackling performance in their previous game, there was far too much high "rugby league" style tackling in this game.

Bigger opponents will only be stopped by good old-fashioned tackling low. There is no doubt that this young and developing squad will learn from this experience.

Saracens did score a good consolation try by Danny Booth, converted by Alex Stuttridge.

It was good to see 20 players travelling to Wadebridge, which perhaps reflects the new ethos at the "Borough".
