FALMOUTH Bowling Club held their last event of the summer, the Captain's Day, at the club on Saturday.
Club captain Maureen Edwards welcomed everyone to the green for five rinks of men versus ladies were played and another rink of men only.
Competition was very keen with the women using many devious tacttics to distract the men's concentration and - it has to be said - without much effort as the men are now hardened to their scheming.
In the battle of the two presidents, ladies' Carol Pereir and men's Harry Stephens, the constant nattering of Carol in Harry's ear seemed to have an effect as Carol's team, all bowling extremely well, gradually got on top and after being level at 9-9 after 11 ends the men fell away losing the next seven ends to finish well beaten 22-10 with Harry's ears still ringing. Well done Carol.
David Winnan's men rink were in no mood to be shaken by the ladies and very soon had gone into a 11-2 lead by half way. The ladies team, with Francis Walther skipping (for the last time as Francis is shifting her allegiance to the Mawnan club), had no answer to the drawing bowls of the men as the ladies persisted in playing heavy bowls at the head to no avail.
David's rink ran out easy winners 19-5.
Tom Reid's rink were having a stiff battle with Linda Amos's rink and the game was level at 10-10 after 12 ends and again 11-11 after 14, but the men managed to collect two threes in the last few ends to win 17-15.
With great hilarity on Paul Williams rink versus Jackie Medlyn's rink, this was undoubtedly the noisiest rink on the green with many devious tactics from both sides taking place. However, despite all the laughter, this was an even game played in great spirit with the men just edging away at the end to win 16-11.
This left ladies captain Maureen Edwards with her team of well established ladies, Vi McDonald and Mavis Cameron accompanied by Christine Chatterton completing her first season of bowling - a nice touch this.
They were playing against men's captain Ron Medlyn's rink with Phil Eells and Doug Moyle, comparatively new bowlers who have shown excellent form this year, accompanied by the experienced John Bishop.
Things looked bleak for the ladies as the men quickly got into their stride to pick up an 8-0 lead after three ends. However the ladies came back and by the 14th end, the men only held a three shot advantage, 13-10, but with 3-3-1 ran out comfortable winners 20-11.
In the men's rink, there was also a close game between Andy Richards' men Tony Pereir's men. Unfortunately Tony's lead did not turn up so extra bowls were played by their lead and number two to compensate.
Tony's rink were running away with the game until Andy's rink struck back with three and a four in succession and eventually Tony's rink won 21-17, but according to the rules of the game, his rink would lose 25 per cent of their score playing three against four, so in the end it was Andy's rink that won 17-16 to pick up the wine prizes.
Everyone was then treated to a superb buffet supplied by Maureen and ladies of the club with wine aplenty flowing. After the meal Maureen said how proud she was to be club captain and thanked everyone for their support.
This was followed by the presentation of club trophies by both ladies' president Carol Pereir and men's president Harry Stephens, ending with a magnificent raffle with prizes evenly distributed.
What a great day everyone had - a tribute to a great captain Maureen Edwards.
