FALMOUTH Gig Club's weekly Friday night races finished on a nail-biting note with one of the most closely-fought races of the season.
The crew members of the Falmouth pilot gigs, Fury and Energy were drawn randomly - as is customary for the Friday racing - and proved to be remarkably evenly matched as they raced neck and neck for the majority of the 1.3 mile, straight course from just off Black Rock back to the end of Queen's Wharf.
Ted Pentecost, founding member of Falmouth Gig Club and that evening's coxswain of Energy gave no quarter as he urged his determined crew ever faster. In the end, though, it was the crew of Fury, coxed by Greg Carroll, who made an outstandingly powerful push in the final lengths to prove the victors in this last race of the series.
Over the 18 week season more than 40 club members have taken part and appeared on the league table. Points have been awarded to individual rowers according to whether they were in the first, second or third boat across the line each week.
Top of this first year's league table with the most points is Simon Roebuck. Second place goes to Brian Trengove and third to Richard Winnan.
