FALMOUTH 16pts

NEWQUAY HORNETS 17pts

JEKYLL and Hyde - a little more of the Jekyll and less of the Hyde would be the ideal recipe for a great season that lies ahead of Falmouth.

Newquay, who appeared to be well beaten, left the Recreation Ground ra ther smuggly after leaving it to the last minute to pull off a dramatic win. They owe it to a little ill discipline, some good fortune and capitalising on some schoolboy mistakes - thou shalt not upset the ref, he has the whistle - especially when it's David May!

Falmouth started well and for the first 20 minutes were the dominant side. They could have wrapped it up there and then. A disallowed try by flanker Ed Lawrence, a knock on and a forward pass at critical stages all frustrated the home side.

However, territorial advantage gave outside half James Instance a deserved penalty and a sweet dropped goal and there was a try from winger Darren Pellow who judged a perfectly- weighed diagonal kick from Instance to catch and cross.

With only 11 points to show for the one-way traffic, a stubborn Newquay broke out for their first visit to the home 22. Great work by their pack saw hooker Leham Bazeley emerge from a pile of bodies having scored the try.

At half time Falmouth were 11-5 in the lead and against the run of play Newquay were still in the game, but Falmouth started the second half as they had in the first half, mounting tremendous pressure, but doing everything but score.

Flanker Chris McColl and hooker Tim Gay worked hard, but then Falmouth had a Hyde moment and handling errors gave the visitors an opportunity to attack from their own 22, resulting in captain Steve Potter scoring. This was converted by Ryan Johns for a slender but short-lived one-point lead.

Falmouth then produced some sparkling rugby with backs and forwards all involved, and prop Andy Palmer showing everyone a clean pair of heels to score. The conversion was missed by Instance and with a minute to go came the killer blow. The opportunity came from Falmouth errors. The visitors mounted a move when all three quarters handled and helped by missed tackles winger Rob McIntyre surged in to give Newquay a late victory.

An early season defeat could probably be a blessing in disguise, as lessons were surely learnt. Player/coach Tim Gay and captain Mike Slater will strive to get the side to be more consistent and nurture the best from the team.

Falmouth are away at Tavistock next Saturday with travelling arrangements yet to be confirmed. It is an interesting opportunity for Falmouth to redeem themselves. Tavy have played four, won three, lost one. They had a handsome 38-5 win at Crediton which surprised everyone.

Bodmin 15pts Falmouth RES 29pts Falmouth, having cancelled previous games through many reasons were finally able to send representation to Bodmin.

The team largely made up of ex-colts, a few surprises and newcomers, including two old boys, Olly Wyatt and John Davidson, proved that experience would keep youth in its' place.

Centres Tom Borsey and Tom Giggs combined to send Liam Hatton, a speedy full back, in for three tries.

Hooker Dave Morgan popped up for an unconverted try and Harry Martin and fellow prop Ruaiyh Papworth impressed.

Half backs Ben Wilson and Tom Honey kept the show on the road. Just when Bodmin were getting their act together Hatton killed them off with a fine individual try.

Their next game is at home on Saturday, 3pm ko, to the same opposition (meet 1.45pm prompt). Communicate with Barry Pollard to inform of availability: 01326 373927/ 07983453586.
