Wendron United manager Jack Greenwood feels the club's set-up is complete after their new floodlights were switched on for the first time on Tuesday night.

The latest step in Wendron's rise, both on and off the pitch, was made when their brand-new floodlights played host to a football match for the very first time.

Unfortunately the team could not provide a result to match the occasion, with the Dron going down to a 2-1 defeat against Penzance in their South West Peninsula League Premier West tie.

The bumper 229 crowd were treated to a fine opening goal from Wendron's Joe Souch, who arrowed in a superb strike from the edge of the box after ten minutes.

But a fortunate deflected strike from Gary Bell and a fine finish from Kevin Lawrence secured victory for the Magpies, despite the hosts' best efforts to find an equaliser in the second half.

"Maybe the occasion got to us," Greenwood said, "but I said to the lads: 'I can't fault you when you put in as much effort as you've done tonight.'

"We didn't play particularly well but as least it wasn't a poor performance in terms of energy and effort. I'm just gutted that we haven't managed to get something from the game."

Despite the defeat, Greenwood was happy with how the rest of the night went for the club, and spoke of his pride of being the Dron's manager for the historic game.

"It was a very proud moment for me personally and for the club and for everyone involved tonight," he said.

"I don't think anyone can deny it looked fantastic tonight. Everything was done properly - the music before the game is something we're not used to, so to have all that set up and to play under lights here was superb.

"The pitch looked immaculate and I think it was a good game of football to go with it. It was quite an occasion and a lot of hard work and hours and hours of meetings and planning and funding have gone into tonight.

"It is disappointing we haven't marked it with a victory. I remember last year when we had Kevin's [Williamson] game against Liskeard, maybe the build-up of these games gets a little bit too much for us because we focus on that rather than the game and we lost that one by a goal as well.

Maybe that is something we need to address but it was a great night to be a part of and I'm very proud to be the manager for tonight."

Wendron will have the chance to address that in two weeks' time when Godolphin Atlantic become the second team to play under the Underlane lights for their SWPL Premier West match on Tuesday, October 1.

With Mousehole and Porthleven also making the trip to Wendron on a Tuesday night in the coming weeks, Greenwood is hoping that his side can get used to their well-lit surroundings.

"We're looking forward to having a run of games here and more games under lights here, and also the crowd and the revenue that brings for the club," he said.

"We work on a very tight budget so we need as many people here as possible, and I appreciate that a lot of those turned out tonight because it is the first game, but hopefully the goal Souchy scored and the standard of football has impressed maybe those that don't always come and watch, at the set-up here. I'm hoping it entices a few more people through the doors.

"I think we're pretty much complete now, we've got everything we could possibly want and it's looking pretty good out there."
