SEVERAL sports in Cornwall have been suspended indefinitely following a statement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The prime minister has said people in the UK should avoid "non-essential" travel and contact with others to curb coronavirus, and that people should work from home where possible.
Following the announcement, the Cornwall FA has released a statement in which it recommends that all grassroots football in Cornwall is to be suspended for the foreseeable future.
It follows the Football Association's announcement that it has suspended all grassroots football in England, while the Rugby Football Union, England Hockey and England Netball have all followed suit.
A statement from the Cornwall FA read: "Following the Government’s announcement today, for people to avoid social contact and gatherings where possible, we are now advising that all grassroots football in Cornwall is postponed for the foreseeable future.
"Throughout this period, we have taken Government advice with the priority being the health and wellbeing of all. We will continue to work closely with the grassroots game during this time.
"We are in regular communication with the Government and the situation within English football at all levels remains under regular review. Further updates will follow as needed."
All elite football in England - the Premier League and English Football League - was suspended indefinitely on Friday, despite a Government recommendation that sport in England could continue for the foreseeable future.
The Football Association maintained the Government's advice, but left the decision on whether to suspend down to individual leagues within the National League System in England, with most opting to suspend their competitions.
The South West Peninsula League and Combination League were among them, while the St Piran League and Trelawny League continued their fixtures over the weekend, but now all leagues have been suspended.
The SWPL released a statement on Monday, which read: "After the advice of HM Government today we fully expect football within the national league system will be suspended for a considerable period.
"We will await Wembley giving formal notice in the coming days. All issues affecting tables etc will be consistent with Rules & FA advice.
"Decisions on restarting, promotion, relegation etc will take some time. Please do not jump to conclusions or request information at this time as this is an unprecedented situation. The health of our communities are far more important than missing results."
The RFU has suspended all rugby in England following today's announcement.
It had not suspended any rugby competitions prior to the weekend, instead allowing postponements on a case-by-case basis, but has now decided to take action.
A statement from the RFU read: "Following government advice, the RFU will suspend all rugby activity in England, at both professional and community level.
"Rugby activity includes club training, league and cup matches plus rugby education courses from 17 March until 14 April subject to continued review.
"The decision has been taken following government advice in the interests of players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider rugby union community.
"Where possible, players at all levels are encouraged to maintain their own personal fitness and keep active during this time, while following government guidelines about safe distance and safe exercise environments.
"The RFU will continue to review and monitor government advice and will provide detailed updates on the impact to the season in the coming weeks."
