FALMOUTH Hockey Club's first team are set to be crowned champions of their division after their league announced plans to use a points-per-game method to decide final league standings.
The West Clubs Women's Hockey League has decided to calculate the final league positions on a percentage points basis, which would see final points calculated on total points won, divided by total points available and multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.
This percentage would see Falmouth's first team crowned champions of the Premier Division 2B with a 75.55 per cent score after scoring 34 of a possible 45 points from their 15 league games this season.
They finish nearly eight per cent ahead of second-placed Exe 2, who scored 33 points from 16 games.
It means Falmouth will be able to take promotion to Premier Division 1 – the top tier of women's hockey in the south west and the fourth tier in the national system.
It would be a second promotion in three seasons for Falmouth, who won the third-tier South Division in 2018.
Falmouth's space may be occupied by Penzance, who are set to be named champions of the South Division.
Falmouth's second team are set to finish eighth in the fourth-tier ten-team Trelawney Division 1, meaning they will have avoided relegation to Division 2.
Camborne School of Mines are set to be crowned champions of Trelawney 1 and may take promotion to the South Division next season.
The league announced that league tables cannot be regarded as final until England Hockey has decided how to close down its National League, with a decision from them expected later this month.
The league also revealed that its committee is set to discuss options for next season in the coming weeks, and admitted that there are "no guarantees" that the season can start in September as normal.
A statement from West Clubs Women's Hockey League chairman Tim Horsfield read: "The West Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Committee met recently, via a conference call, to discuss how we would finalise the end of season tables, and therefore the promotions and relegations, following the early conclusion of the 2019-20 season.
"Having looked into a number of possible solutions we finally decided on calculating the final League positions on a percentage points basis. This is calculated on total points won (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), less any points deducted for disciplinary offences, then divided by the total number of points available from the games played, multiplied by 100 to give a percentage. Should teams have the same percentage points then goal difference will be used.
"Using this basis takes into consideration that at the point when we closed the season not all teams have played the same number of matches. This method gives fairness to all teams and preserves the League's integrity.
"It should be noted that the League tables cannot be regarded as final until England Hockey has decided how to close down National League; a decision from them is expected this month. However, we will provide notification when the League tables are final.
"We realise this decision will not please some, however even the most ardent objector will realise the situation we are in is totally without precedent, to us and the other Leagues around the country.
"In the coming weeks the committee will look at options for next season, as there are no guarantees we will be able to start the season in September. Updates will be issued on the website when available."
