Cornwall retain team championship
CORNWALL swept the board at the English Schools Association South and South West Championships held at Yeovil when they retained the team championship for the second successive year and won the individual title for the first time.
In the team championships Richard Kirby (Perranporth) and Philip Rowe (West Cornwall), both members of the 1994 winning side, together with Steve Chapman (St Enodoc) and Scott Gilbert (Mullion), scored a total of 431 points (best three scores over 36 holes) to beat Oxfordshire by the comfortable margin of 16 points with Hampshire third.
Results: Cornwall 431, Oxfordshire 447, Hampshire 448, Wiltshire 451, Somerset 460, Avon 466, Gloucestershire 473 and Dorset 479.
In the individual championship Philip Rowe returned rounds of 70/71 to take the title for the first time with Chris Register (Bude and North Cornwall) second with 74/69, which was also the lowest round of the championships. Justin Rose of Hampshire was third on countback.
Scores: Philip Rowe 141, Chris Register 143, Justin Rose 143, Steve Chapman 144.
After the fourth round of the 1995 Atkinson's County Junior Order of Merit there are just five points separating the top five places.
At the Daily Telegraph Championship round at Perranporth, the home club's Richard Kirby, South West Counties champion Adam Frayne (St Mellion) and current Order of Merit champion Steve Chapman (St Enodoc) all tied for first place with two over par rounds of 74 to share maximum points.
On the following day at St Mellion, Steve Chapman took the honours with a superb two under par round of 67 followed by Scott Godfrey (St Enodoc) and Darren Desmond (China Fleet) both with 69 and Philip Rowe (West Cornwall) on 70.
Current positions after four rounds: Richard Kirby and Adam Frayne 40 points; Scott Godfrey and Steve Chapman 36; Jonathan Coleman (West Cornwall) 35; Scott Gilbert (Mullion) 28 and Kristian Godfrey (St Enodoc) 24.
