FALMOUTH Ladies Hockey Club's first team lifted the Cornwall Cup on Saturday after a tense 3-2 win over Caradon.
Caradon took an early lead after a Falmouth error at the back allowed them to race through on goal, Hannah Mathias the Falmouth keeper rushed out to deflect the first attempt on goal, only for it to be neatly finished at the back post by a supporting Caradon forward.
Falmouth settled and began to create the better chances, with multiple attacks coming down the right wing through Rachel Tatlow and Amie Pritchard. They bettered their opposite numbers for pace and skill, but chances went begging as Falmouth struggled to find the net.
Falmouth struck twice in quick succession just after the half hour mark, with both goals being converted by Tatum Goodwin. The first came after consistent pressure in the D resulted in a shot which was well saved, only to fall to Jess White who teed up Tatum for the finish.
Straight from the restart Falmouth pressured to win the ball back and attack the Caradon goal. With a crowded D, and Caradon unable to clear their lines the ball fell to Tatum again who scrambled the ball over the line.
Another lapse in defensive concentration early in the second half left the Caradon striker free on the penalty spot, who turned well and hit a reverse shot to level the scores.
But midway through Falmouth were awarded a penalty corner, which was swept out to Hudson who struck it from the edge of the D and straight into the back of the goal.
Regaining the lead clearly galvanised the Falmouth players as they mounted wave after wave of attack. They were unable to add to their tally, however, but it didn't matter once the umpire blew his whistle for full time to crown Falmouth as county champions.
Falmouth: Hannah Mathias, Megan Cookson, Nic Hinton, Clare Hudson, Claudia Bedford, Rachael Tatlow, Laura Heather, Faye Ivall, Becky Paisley, Jess White, Morgan Muir, Tatum Goodwin, Tilly Stephen, Amie Pritchard.
