Two boxers from Falmouth and Penryn Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) enjoyed a successful evening in the St Just ABC show at Penzance Leisure Centre on Saturday, November 27.
On what will probably be the last outing of the year for the club, the night was made special with two great performances earning the club a solid win and great effort in skills bout ensuring bragging rights of the county for Falmouth and Penryn ABC.
Up first for the club was Tom Perkins who participated in his debut skills bout at the junior 54kg weight category against Tavistock ABC’s Noah Handley in three rounds of one and a half minutes.
Perkins conceded a considerable advantage in height and reach to the Tavistock boxer but showed excellent composure to withstand the initial charge from Handley at the opening bell and boxed sensibly without being drawn into a brawl.
Both boxers maintained a high tempo throughout the round and displayed a great variety of punches and superb ring knowledge using the full size of the ring to avoid shots and counter attack.
In the second round, Perkins landed several stinging right hands to the head and body of his opponent which allowed him to take the centre of the ring in what was another highly competitive round of quality boxing.
The final round saw Perkins land a hard straight right hand over the top of a lazy jab from Handley, after which the Devonian boxer spent the rest of the round boxing defensively, using his feet and height to avoid the now coming forward Perkins.
This tactic didn’t always work, and the Falmouth and Penryn boxer did manage to pin his opponent to the corner on a few occasions with combinations and flurries of straight shots.
As it was a skills bout and non-competitive, no winner would be declared but Falmouth and Penryn’s Tom Perkins should be proud for controlling much of a highly skilled well fought contest.
Next up for the club was Dan Lea who faced off against St Austell’s Samuel Martyn in what would be a tough battle in the youth 72kg category.
Martyn boxed in a southpaw stance, firing out right hand jabs and moving well but it wasn’t enough to avoid a solid right hand to the midsection from Lea, causing the St Austell boxer to jump back.
The boxers were evenly matched and there was little to separate the first round with both boxers having their moments of success.
The second round got underway with Lea landing multiple jabs and right crosses causing Martyn’s head to be knocked back and certainly catching the eye of the judges ringside.
The St Austell boxer then struggled to get beyond Lea’s compact guard and snappy jab with much of his work falling short of the target in the second.
While Lea landed a number of powerful right-hand punches, in what was a dominating ring for the Falmouth and Penryn boxer.
The final round was even and both boxers were more cautious than the previous with again Martyn displaying good movement, however, the eye-catching clean punches came from Lea who sealed his victory in the round.
In what was only his second outing Lea showed he had the determination and grit to push that little bit further and earned himself a well deserved split decision victory.
