Wendron United secured their fourth win in a row in the South West Peninsula League (SWPL) when they saw off Penzance in a 2-1 victory at Penlee Park on Monday, December 27.
Wendron took the lead in the first half five minutes before the interval when striker Charlie Young found himself unmarked to convert a Jack Stocker free kick from close range.
But Wendron’s lead didn’t last long as they were pinned back to level terms just five minutes into the second period.
However, the visitors restored the lead in the 58th minute when Cameron Wheat’s close range shot beat the Penzance goalkeeper at the near post to claim all three points.
In the 90th minute Penzance were reduced to ten men when their goalkeeper was sent off for fouling a Wendron attacker outside the area.
Today’s result gives us a 100% record in December means we sit 3rd in the @swpleague at the end of 2021. Thanks to @PenzanceAFC for their hospitality and best of luck for the rest of the season @Cornishfootball @swsportsnews 🐐 pic.twitter.com/jw6eynbhVJ

Despite this Wendron failed to increase the scoreline in the dying minute but the win takes them up to third in the league table ahead of Liskeard Athletic whose game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Athletic are Wendron’s next opponents in the league when they go head-to-head on Saturday, January 8.
The Dron are just a point behind second-placed Camelford who have also played a game more than Wendron.
Wendron’s next match is on Monday, January 3 when they host fellow SWPL West side Bodmin Town in the Third Round of the Walter C Parson Cup.
