Wendron United boss Michael O'Neill was delighted with his side's terrific display in the Cornwall Senior Cup Semi-Final as they defeated Saltash United 3-1 at Burngullow Park.
Dron had gone into the game as underdogs sitting a league below Saltash but they produced a clinical performance to sweep away their opponents thanks to strikes from Jack Stocker, Charlie Young, and Cameron Wheat. While Saltash grabbed a goal back with 20 minutes to go through Sam Farrant.
Speaking to the Packet after the game, a jubilant O'Neill said: "It is amazing, we have worked so hard this season to generate top-level performances.
"I said in the preview this week we aren't here to make up the numbers and despite being underdogs we have a genuine belief that if we turn up on the day the other team needs to be able to put in a really good performance in to get anything from us.
"Luckily at the right moments at key points in the game we put the ball in the back of the net and that can deflate the opposition and I felt we did that in the first half we restricted them to very little I thought in the first 45 and in the second half we were defending for the majority of it lets not get away from that but we were lucky enough to get another counter opportunity which we took again.
"It is fantastic to be in the final."
Wendron despite being a league below Saltash who are fifth in the Western League dominated the opening stages, at times playing the Ashes off the park with some flowing football.
"The first half it surprised me how controlled we were in our approach" O'Neill began. "I always expect the lads to play well, we set our standards really high and I don't really expect them to ever drop from that.
"Often we go through waves, we peak then we defend and go through that fluctuation but particularly in that first half we stayed at that high level.
"We were constantly a threat in and out of possession, out of possession on the counter and in possession with the way we were playing and I just had a feeling that if we got the key moments right it could be our day. Let's not take away from the second half where Saltash really came back at us and we had to dig in really deep."
The Manager lauded his team's defensive second-half display as multiple players threw their bodies on the line to protect their advantage. He said: "The lads are brilliant, their character is fantastic and has been all season.
"Today we had a few injury issues and Covid issues coming into the game so we missed several players that were regular starters so it was an opportunity for guys to step in.
"Fred (Walter) at centre back putting himself on the line, Reece (Carroll) had to shift across. They did fantastically. They are good footballers first and foremost, good players can adjust to the situation and they did that really well and it's just a case now to recover for Callington on Saturday.
"Then we have a good tough run in for the rest of the season, it is important for us to finish as high as we can. It's important for us to close that gap on Liskeard and then Easter Monday final to look forward to."
Wendron United will play Falmouth Town in the final of the competition on Easter Monday (April 18) at Poltair Park St Austell.
