A 3-2 win over local rivals Penryn Athletic secured Falmouth Town the South West Peninsula League Premier West Title on Good Friday.

A strike late in the first half from Alex Wharton had Town in the ascendency but Penryn levelled shortly after the interval when Jack Rapsey headed in from a corner.

Immediately from the kick-off Town went up the other end and scored in spectacular fashion thanks to a sweet half volley from Olly Walker.

Jack Bowyer scored Town's last goal of the game later in the half with a well-taken rocket from the edge of the box.

The hosts had the last say in the derby though when Ryan Reeve tapped in after a Rapsey effort had been parried by Zach Telling in the dying moments.

Town, who had required just a point to win the league, held on to secure all three and their first league title since the 1999/2000 season.

Falmouth Town Manager Andrew Westgarth made seven changes heading into the fixture, perhaps with one eye on their Senior Cup Final with Wendron United on Easter Monday.

Penryn had the first real chance to note in the fixture with just three minutes on the clock when space opened up for Jack Rapsey just shy of the left side of the box, but the forward wrapped his effort way over the bar.

The lively Alex Wharton was proving hard to keep tabs on for the hosts as the winger did superbly well to beat two men down the line before cutting a neat cross to Jack Bowyer, the returning forward's effort suffered the same fate as Rapsey's only minutes earlier.

Alex Hayhoe had a glorious chance to upset the promotion party when he found himself on the end of a low cross from Kyle Cooke but the centre midfielder sliced his effort wide after nine minutes.

Falmouth's much-changed side began to get a grip on the game and they should have been in front with 19 minutes played. After being slid in down the right channel Bowyer's cross/shot found its way perfectly to the unmarked Olly Walker at the far post. But with the goal gaping the midfielder somehow skewed his effort wide of the mark.

Charlie Edney was the next Falmouth forward to have a go when he poked a Wharton cross goalbound but again the effort bobbled wide of the target.

Penryn keeper Ethan Elwell was in the thick of it after 34 minutes making a superb reflex save to deny an acrobatic attempt from Bowyer.

The home custodian was at it again with a magnificent double save in the 38th minute denying Edney and somehow the sliding Scott Kellow to keep Town at bay.

The keeper could do nothing to stop Wharton's piledrive after 43 minutes as the winger opened the scoring for the day. Elwell instinctively parried a shot from Bowyer however the ball fell kindly to Wharton to smash into the far left corner as the half-finished 0-1 to Town.

Penryn began the second half and were determined to make a game of it against the champions-elect, and to their delight, the home side grabbed an equaliser with just three minutes of the second half played.

Jack Rapsey climbed highest inside the penalty area to direct a corner into the back of the net at the near post to stun the crowd and make the game all square at 1-1.

However, only seconds later Town were ahead once again with a strike worthy of winning any title.

A sweeping switched ball was missed by Penryn's James Daniel and fell at the feet of Olly Walker 25 yards out on the left side of the box. The winger expertly brought the ball down, before lacing his effort on the half volley into the top right corner in the 49th minute much to the delight of the travelling contingent to make it 1-2.

The game fell into a little bit of a lull with most of the action taking place in the middle third as both sides made changes to try and break each other down.

There was a brief moment of panic for Falmouth when Kirk Davies' clearance hit his own man and landed at the feet of Cooke. But his cross/shot was well blocked by a Town defender after 62 minutes.

The away side grabbed their third goal of the match to seemingly put the game beyond doubt with 68 minutes on the clock. Substitute Jasper Turner did well to get his head up and feed the ball to Bowyer.

The Falmouth striker intelligently dummied the ball through his legs, thus spinning his defender before unleashing a well-placed strike into the far corner to make it 1-3.

Penryn's Ryan Reeve then had two chances to get the home side back in the game but saw both his lob and a right footed shot from the edge of the area go wide of the target.

Falmouth Coach and former Penryn player James Miller made a rare appearance from the bench with 14 minutes to go of the 90.

But the last exchanges saw the home side throw caution to the wind in search of a late goal through a number of corners and crosses.

They eventually did get the final goal of the game in stoppage time when Rapsey's curling effort could only be punched as far as Reeve by Zach Telling.

The forward couldn't miss this time tapping into the largely unguarded net with just seconds to go to make it 2-3

That consolation did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Falmouth players, coaching squad and fans who were able to celebrate winning the league title as the referee blew the final whistle.

Sweet Falmouth Town, Town all over and the Town are going up blared across Kernick Road as the majority in the crowd were able to party to finally celebrate the news which had been 22 years in the making.

Town have the opportunity to make it a double-winning season when they take on Wendron United at St Austell's Poltair Park in the Cornwall Senior Cup Final on Monday, April 18. Kick-off in that fixture is at 2 pm.
