Despite Bideford's strong start to the season, sitting in second place in the league, Falmouth Eagles managed to secure a hard-fought victory with a scoreline of 23-21.
The game got off to an intense start as Bideford made a break through the center from the kick-off, threatening to take an early lead. However, Falmouth's full-back, Harvey Penhallurick, displayed exceptional defensive skills and made a crucial try-saving tackle to deny Bideford the opportunity to score.
Falmouth Eagles were the first to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Niall Davies Hale dived over the try line from close range after a well-executed ruck. Penhallurick successfully converted the try, giving Falmouth a 7-0 lead.
However, Bideford quickly responded with a try of their own from their captain, Peter Bowes, who powered through Falmouth's defense off a short pass. Joe Faulkner successfully converted the try, leveling the score at 7-7.
Just before halftime, Falmouth Eagles showcased their attacking prowess with a well-coordinated try. The second half saw Falmouth Eagles capitalize on Bideford's disciplinary issues, as the latter conceded penalties, allowing Falmouth to extend their lead. Penhallurick added to Falmouth's tally with a penalty in the 55th minute, increasing their lead to ten points.
Bideford fought back valiantly and managed to break through Falmouth's strong defense with a catch and drive try from close range. Faulkner's conversion narrowed the gap, making it 17-14.
In the closing stages of the match, Penhallurick's accurate kicking proved crucial as he added two more penalties, extending Falmouth's lead to nine points. However, Bideford refused to surrender and scored a converted try in the 78th minute, putting Falmouth under immense pressure.
Fortunately for Falmouth, Bideford conceded a penalty shortly after, allowing the Eagles to hold on and secure a well-deserved victory.
With two wins from three matches, Falmouth Eagles have displayed commendable form, especially when playing at home.
The team will now eagerly prepare for their upcoming match against local rivals Penryn, who have also shown strong performances with two wins out of three matches.
