HELSTON FC Veterans have capped off a remarkable season by securing the league title in a showdown against Newquay, completing a historic treble.
In a thrilling season finale, Helston defeated Newquay AFC Veterans to clinch the Cornwall Veterans League Western Division title, adding this trophy to their already impressive collection.
Despite Newquay dominating throughout the season and topping the league table for much of the campaign, Helston’s consistency and resilience proved to be the deciding factors in the end.
“It was a very, very long season,” commented Helston Vets player-manager Shaun Parker. “We don’t normally run to the end of May; it’s normally done by the first or second week of the month.” The late finish was due to an extended period of rain earlier in the season, forcing the league to extend its schedule.
Helston has also faced a number of challenges throughout the season, including a string of injuries. Despite this, they remained competitive, and their team spirit was a crucial factor in their success.
“It has been a fantastic season, said Parker. “To go right to the very last kick of the game, around eight or nine times throughout May, is a lot for the vets.
“We have managed to get through this entire season and finish treble winners. We’re absolutely delighted with the result, and the team spirit and effort.”
The win at Newquay has officially capped off a memorable season for the vets. They had already secured victories in the Sunday Cup and the Knockout Cup earlier in the season, making the league title the perfect final chapter in their remarkable story.
Dan Stidwell opened the scoring in the first half for Helston, followed by goals from Parker, Hugh Howlett and Jason Robertson.
Despite the victory, Helston conceded a late goal from a corner kick, giving Newquay a small consolation prize.
With the season now complete, Helston Vets can celebrate their treble success and look forward to a well-deserved rest before the start of a new season.
