Wiveliscombe 34 - Penryn 7
There was a disappointing start to the league season for Penryn when they were defeated by Somerset side Wiveliscombe, writes Jonathan Plummer.
After a good pre-season with victories over Falmouth and Veor, and defeats to higher league clubs Wadebridge and Topsham, Penryn were well prepared for their longest journey of the season to Wiveliscombe.
Playing in their changed grey strip, and playing down the slope, Penryn made a confident start and had plenty of pressure on the Wiveliscombe tryline. Unfortunately for the Borough a five metre line out was lost and Wiveliscombe cleared their lines.
The home side started to get on top, having the upper hand in the scrums. Wiveliscombe scored two quick tries to take a 12-nil lead.
Penryn had a huge chance to get their first try of the afternoon but somehow a three on one overlap was not taken advantage of, with the scoring pass going to ground.
Wiveliscombe extended their advantage just before half time with a penalty kick to bring a half time score of 15 nil to Wiveliscombe.
The home side now playing down the slope got another converted score to go further ahead. Penryn eventually did manage to get in the game and had plenty of pressure on the Wivvy line, and it was new skipper James Salisbury who broke a tackle to dive down by the posts. Salisbury converted his own score.
Despite their best efforts Penryn could not force a comeback and indeed it was Wiveliscombe who scored two late tries against a tiring visiting defence.
Penryn went in search of a late consolation try and despite plenty of pressure could not force their way over, with a knock on in the act of scoring summing up Penryn’s day.
This was a disappointing start for Penryn and there will be plenty to work on in training this week. Penryn’s man of the match was young no. 8 Oli Mount who had a great match in a losing cause.

Penryn reserves 59 - St Ives reserves 17
There was better news for Penryn reserves side defeating their St Ives counterparts in an entertaining match, hooker Gareth Wills scoring two tries the rest of the tries being shared between the team. This was a great start for the newly reformed reserves side.
Special mention must go to Marc Dennis for reffing the match when the original ref called off half an hour before kickoff.
