Penryn Ladies 12 - Bath Ladies 24

Penryn played their second match of the season as they welcomed Bath to the Memorial Ground, writes Jonathan Plummer.

Penryn were in confident mood after an excellent performance in defeating Crediton the week before.

Bath started the match at a real pace and scored two tries in the first 15 minutes by Olivia Lewis and Tilly Smethurst, both converted by Sarah Holloway.

The rest of the half was a much more even affair with Penryn playing some great running rugby only to be met by stern Bath defence, for an interval lead of 12-0 to Bath.

Bath made it 19-0 at the start of the second half as Cat Davidson scored by the posts again converted by Holloway.

Penryn then had their best spell of the match and eventually broke the leaky Bath defence as Flanker Heather Holmes dived over.

Bath made sure of the match as Molly Daniel crossed for Bath’s bonus point try and again converted by Holloway.

Penryn got the final try of the match after a kick into the Bath 22 by Georgia Hall caused confusion in the Bath defence. Winger Bo Prout managed to get hold of the ball and raced through to touch down; Fly half Hall added the conversion from a difficult angle, to bring the final score to Penryn 12, Bath 24.

Despite the defeat this was a hugely encouraging performance from Penryn against a very good Bath team.

Penryn’s forward of the match was Gracie Bunch who had an outstanding match and back of the match was full back Lucy Mehta who had a great match in attack and defence.

Penryn’s firsts team next match is away to Western Hornets on October 13.

Meanwhile Penryn Ladies reserves play their first ever match on October 6 against Plymouth Arguam at the Memorial Ground.
