Camborne 33 - Hornets 27

Camborne left it late to finally claim a deserved fourth victory of the season against a determined Hornets after a hard fought battle at a windswept Recreation Ground, writes Martin Symons. 

Despite facing the strong breeze and slope, ‘Town’ will reflect on a number of good opportunities, often prompted by the outstanding counter attacking of Kyle Moyle that came to nothing before eventually turning around 20-12 down at the break.

The visitors had gone ahead with an early converted score but this was soon answered by a catch and drive dot down for Ben Priddey, well converted by full back Moyle.

At the end of the opening quarter a penalty and an unconverted corner try had the Hornets up to 15 points, but again the Cherry & Whites promptly cut the deficit with hooker Priddey’s second catch and drive score in the turnstile corner.

Before the break a spell of sustained forward pressure allowed the visitors to bag a further try which again when unconverted in the tricky wind.

Camborne looked to go up a gear in the second period, with the elements at their backs, but were initially frustrated in an error strewn stop start opening. As the two forward packs continued to wrestle for domination youngsters Dan Marais and Kaea Griffiths stood out with a number of strong tackles.

On the hour ‘Town’ cut the deficit to a single point, with a well worked try wide out from centre Connor Gilbert majestically improved by man of the match Moyle.

Hornets would not lie down at 19-20 and soon stretched their lead when they fashioned an excellent long range converted try.

With the home forwards now well on top in the scrums, pressure told on the visitors when a penalty punted to the West Bank delivered Priddey’s hat trick of catch and drive touchdowns. Another excellent Moyle conversion made the score 26-27 with minutes remaining.

Returning to the attack, with rain now falling, the Cherry & Whites laid siege to the Hornets goal line winning a series of scrum penalties under the posts. Eventually the inevitable penalty try was awarded which put ‘Town’ 33-27 in front.

Camborne then controlled play for the remaining minutes closing out the final exchanges of the game on the attack in the scoreboard corner.
