It was a mixed weekend of results for Penryn's rugby teams over the weekend, with the men’s and ladies' sides being defeated while there was better news for the colts and reserves sides, writes Jonathan Plummer.

Plymstock Oaks 31 - Penryn 12

Penryn’s men’s first team crossed the Tamar bridge to take on unbeaten Plymstock Oaks at a sunny day at Horsham fields. Penryn were looking to return to winning ways after two defeats in a row.

This was an enthralling encounter with the result in doubt going into the last ten minutes.

It was Plymstock who were first on the scoresheet when hooker Joe Donnelly got the try, the conversion went wide but the home side had the lead after ten minutes.

For the next 30 minutes it was Penryn who were on top gaining dominance in the forwards, pushing the Plymstock scrum back at every opportunity.

Penryn will be left to rue missed chances notably when scrum half Sam Hewitt made two searing breaks; unfortunately for the Borough they couldn’t finish off either chance.

Penryn eventually got reward for their dominance following a lineout. Plymstock could not stop the Penryn driving maul, and hooker Chris Hellier got the touchdown, skipper James Salisbury adding the extras to give the visitors a 7 - 5 lead at the half time whistle.

It was The Oaks who started the second half the better, with winger Joe Brearly scoring in the corner and fly half Lewis Patterson kicking the conversion as the hosts retook the lead.

Unfortunately for Penryn skipper James Salisbury was forced off with a leg injury, being replaced by Jack Dunstan. Despite the setback Penryn continued to make inroads into the home defence with some strong runs by the forwards.

Penryn levelled the scores after 50 minutes following more pick and gos by the forwards. It was no.8 Matt Carlyon, who had a storming match, who dived over. The conversion slipped wide but the Borough had tied the scores at 12 all.

Penryn were further hampered when fly half Nathan Strick was forced off injured and Centre Sam Hitchens was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes, forcing Penryn to play forwards in the back line.

Penryn ran out of steam with all the disruption and Plymstock scored three tries in the last eight minutes. Tries were scored by Matt wingers Matt Jackson and Joe Breally. Replacement Will Scantlebry got the final score deep into injury time. Lewis Patterson added two more conversions to give the Oaks a 31 - 12 victory and stay second in the league table.

Penryn will feel disappointed not to take more from this match, dominating Plymstock for large parts of the match and just running out of steam in the last ten minutes.

Penryn’s man of the match was Ben Woodmansy for his part in a powerful scrum.

The Borough return to the Memorial ground this Saturday when they welcome Bideford, kick off is 3pm.

Roseland 35 - Penryn Reserves 14

There was better news for Penryn Reserves on Saturday when they beat Roseland 35 - 14 despite trailing 14 - 7 at the break, but a storming second half led them to victory at Philleigh.

Tru/Fal Colts 5 - Penryn Colts 37

This Saturday the Colts play Saltash at Perranporth.

Weston-Super-Mare 68 - Penryn Ladies 5

On Sunday Penryn Ladies had an early start as they travelled to Weston-Super-Mare to play the Hornets at the Nest.

This was a tough and physical match against a very well drilled Hornets side who ran out winners 68 - 5 scoring ten tries.

Penryn who never gave up got their consolation try by fly half Georgia Hall.

This Sunday Penryn host Cornish rivals Launceston at the Memorial ground, kick off is 2.30pm.
