Helston Athletic FC is looking to add an extra grandstand and turnstiles following promotion to the Southern League.

The club has submitted a planning application to Cornwall Council.

This is for a grandstand and turnstiles along with solar panels to the roof of the clubhouse at Helston its Kellaway Park ground in Clodgey Lane.

An application put together on behalf of the club by architect Chris Strike, of RA Design, explains that with Helston winning the Western League in Step 5 last year, this has seen the club progress to the Southern League at Step 4. As a result, the club now needed to make ground improvements.

The planning application is for some of the improvements required at that level of football.

More details can be found on Cornwall Council’s planning portal via its website, under reference PA24/07563.

This week also saw the news that Jack Crago had now signed permanently for Athletic, having been playing with the team on loan since the start of the season.

First team manger Matt Cussack said: “Jack has done terrifically well on loan and suits our style of play. Importantly, our style of play also gets the best out of him.

“His impact thus far has been phenomenal and if he can replication that across the season his signing makes us a credible threat in this league.”

Crago was instrumental in Athletic’s 4-1 win against his former club Tavistock at the weekend, when Athletic played away to The Lambs at Langford Park.

Despite pressure from Helston from the start, it was Tavistock that opened the scoring after 15 minutes.

Helston were quick to respond, however, when just two minutes later Callum Martindale grabbed the equaliser.

From then on Helston went from strength to strength. A goal from Reece Thomson at 27 minutes put the Blues ahead, following a quality pass from Jordan Copp to Crago, whose efforts earned the chance for Thomson to slot it home.

This was followed by Blues’ third in the 39th minute. It could have any one of the three unmarked Helston players at the back post who headed it home, but in the event it was Cob.

Athletic went into the break 3-1 up and wasted little time in the second half to cement their win.

Just two minutes into resumed play, Athletic scored their fourth goal – although there was some dispute over who should claim it. While many on the touchline reported Crago as leaping highest to head it home, others said it was Bentley.

Regardless of the scorer, it was enough to see Helston through home and dry.

Despite a number of substitutions in the second half, from both sides, Tavistock could not find a break and Athletic made the journey home 4-1 winners.

Helston currently sit second in the table in the Southern League Division One (South), with 18 points and a game in hand to top of the table Yate Town, on 22 points.

Helston next take on Westbury United this Saturday, at Kellaway Park, with a 3pm kick-off.
