Camborne 54 - Exeter University 24
Camborne remain top of the National Two West table heading into the first break in the League fixtures after a seven-try second half showing saw off the determined challenge of Exeter University, writes Martin Symons.
Facing the wind and slope the Cherry & Whites made a dream start with hooker Ben Priddey being driven over for his 16th try of the season as early as the opening minute.
Thereafter a stop start first half belonged largely to the Students who notched up 17 points with former Cornwall U20’s fly half Sam Walker bagging a try, two conversions and a monster penalty goal.
Trailing 5-17 at half time ‘Town’ came out fired up for the 2nd period and almost immediately Josh Matavesi found Alex Ducker with a well judged pass which allowed the speedster to race over for Kyle Moyle to convert.
Exeter soon hit back with a try again converted by Walker but thereafter it was to be one way traffic as Camborne cut loose to add 42 unanswered points.
On 48 minutes a lineout from a penalty punted to touch in front of the West Bank saw skipper Jon Drew peel around the front to dot down. Full back Moyle stroked over the extras from a wide angle.
With the hour mark approaching the Cherry & Whites took the lead when outstanding No 8 Dan Marais tapped a quick penalty close in to plunge over near the posts with Moyle converting.
As the visitors began conceding frequent scrum penalties the home side played the advantage to launch a series of long range attacks down the slope.
From the first Moyle broke through before chipping to the scoreboard corner where Harry Larkins won the race to the touchdown. Moyle improved the try with a majestic kick for 33-24.
Inside the last 10 minutes a CJ Boyce up and under created chaos in the visiting defence and centre Matavesi gathered to send right wing Larkins in under the posts with Moyle adding the routine conversion.
Another attack from deep and a deft Moyle chip then allowed left wing Ducker the opportunity to collect and cross for his 2nd try of the afternoon with Moyle again converting.
Late on replacement hooker Tommy Southworth added further gloss with a catch and drive score wide out with Moyle landing a superb conversion to wrap up a convincing home victory.
