Falmouth Eagles 2XV 5 - Illogan Park 31
Do not let the scoreline fool you; the Eagles 2XV showcased some of their best rugby in recent times under the leadership of captain Danny Trick, writes Gupta Singh.
Newcomers Oscar Heald, Tom Hippach, Sam Sutton, Dan Cole and Tristan Egremont-Lee injected fresh spirit into the game, and their enthusiasm was palpable throughout the match.
Falmouth played with undeniable grit, even as they found themselves trailing early on. Within the first ten minutes, they conceded a converted try and a penalty, putting them behind 0-10.
However, the momentum shifted when returning flanker Callum Reid made a powerful run, slicing through the Illogan defense to bring the score to 5-12. This moment energised the Eagles and gave them a renewed sense of purpose.
The Eagles' defence held strong for much of the game, frustrating the Illogan team and stifling their scoring opportunities. Greg Pooley and Rhys Barnes made good ground and territory for the home side on the sloping Tregenver pitch.
Illogan continued to run hard lines but opted for route one at times, when they could have easily gone right or left to seal a score, which meant the Eagles were able to hold them on the line for large periods of the second half.
It wasn't until the 70th minute, when injuries had mounted and a yellow card took their toll, that Illogan's backs finally found the space to exploit the 13 who remained. Illogan capitalised on the weakened defence, wrapping up the game with a flurry of late tries to secure their well-deserved victory.
Man of the match was shared by Ben Tuffrey and Tristan Egremont-Lee.
While the final score may not reflect the hard work and dedication displayed by the Eagles 2XV, it’s essential to emphasise that there is no “I” in team. The Eagles played with heart and determination, embodying the spirit of collective effort.
