Pirates Amateurs 29 Redruth II 17

Played at the Mennaye Field on Saturday, this proved yet another entertaining game in Counties 1 Tribute Western West writes Phil Westren.

It was also one to especially remember for home hooker Eli Williams who scored four tries in the match.

The Pirates were quick to set the tone for this fixture, one when their potent driving maul delivered an early try for Williams which was converted by evergreen full-back Rhodri McAtee.

In reply, another experienced player in Redruth’s number ‘15’, Ashley Hosking, landed a penalty, but with two more tries from Williams, one of which McAtee converted, the home side led 19-3 at the break.

Into the second half, Williams scored another try that was converted by McAtee, before the always-willing Reds scored two tries through fly-half Adam Hall and prop Cameron Leigh, with Hosking adding the extras to both.

Speaking after the game, happy Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren said: “This was a great win, The boys are working hard and we have earned some momentum in the way we are training and playing.

“It wasn’t our usual free-flowing style, but it was what was needed on the day. Our kicking game and discipline were excellent, and we created a huge amount of pressure from that with the forwards taking over with four maul tries.

"Mentioning the same, credit as always goes to fellow coach John Stevens, who does such as fantastic job with them.”
