Pitching In Southern League Div One

Sat 16 Nov - Evesham United 3 – 2  Helston Athletic

Promotion to the Southern League has resulted in some early starts for Helston AFC and this Saturday was no exception with the First Team coach making the six-hour drive to The Spiers & Hartwell Stadium, home of the Robbins, writes Kev Griggs.

The squad that had been ravaged by injury and illness throughout the week. Drawing on the Development Squad, 17-year-old Dylan Mitchell was again brought in to supplement the First Team and continues to impress.

His goal line clearance is worthy of a watch on the Piran Films highlights video. Helston had a strong shout for a penalty, had it been given and converted would have made the long day less agonising for the Blues.

Summing up the day, First Team Manager Matt Cusack said, ‘Frustrating day on the road, in a game that could have gone either way. Disappointingly we conceded another 3 goals leaving ourselves too much to do despite Jacob Smith and Jack Crago drawing us level on two occasions.’

Cornwall Women’s County Cup Sun 17 Nov -

Helston AFC Women 4-2 Redruth United.

Helston Women hosted their close neighbours, Redruth United, at Kellaway Park in the MH Goal’s Women Cup.

First half the home side wasted no time asserting their control. In the 9th minute, Prouse opened the scoring with a clinical finish, capitalizing on a perfectly weighted pass from Verry to make it 1-0.

Momentum continued to swing in their favour, and in the 26th minute, Moxom double the lead. A sharp cross from Cook found Moxom in space, and she made no mistake, slotting the ball into the net for 2-0.

The second half started with more pressure from the home side, leading to an own goal in the 49th minute. A dangerous ball into the box from Prouse and the oppositions defence mistakenly putting it in the back of the net pushing the score 3-0.

However, the visitors didn't back down. In a quick five-minute spell, they struck back with goals in the 53rd and 58th minutes, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and putting the game back in the balance.

Despite the pressure, Helston responded brilliantly in the 78th minute, Moore sealed the victory with a well-taken goal, following another assist from Prouse. Securing an impressive 4-2 victory, Helston progress comfortably through to the last eight in the competition.

The Young Blues in the Development Squad beat a resilient Mullion 3-1, but the fixture was soured with injury to talented young player Freddie Kemp, who unfortunately broke his leg, we wish him a swift and rapid recovery.

Sadly, our first team, traveling all way to 7th placed Evesham, Worcester, for a Southern League fixture, lost. Going up with a depleted squad due to injury & illness, a courageous effort saw us lose narrowly to one of our strong play-off competitors.

Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our next home game’!
