Redruth colts 24 - Penryn/Perran colts 26

While Storm Bert played havoc with the sports schedule over the weekend one match that did go ahead was the much anticipated clash between Redruth and Penryn/Perran colts teams, writes Jonathan Plummer.

The two best sides in the county put on an excellent and tense display at Redruth’s Recreation Ground on Saturday which went down to the very last minute in horrendous conditions.

Played in front of a packed Terry Pryor stand this was a game of two halves and the away side had the considerable advantage of the gale force wind at their backs in the first half. Penryn scored the first try when Harrison Isaacs went over, Vince Marney added an excellent conversion.

Penryn extended their lead when Jake Andrews scored a try, this time the conversion drifted wide with the wind but Penryn/Perran side had a 12 nil lead after 15 minutes.

Redruth scored a converted try against the run of play to reduce the deficit to just five points.

The Penryn/Perran side came roaring back to score two more tries before halftime, first Dan Webster scored after a powerful run and minutes later Lewis Crannis touched down. Vince Marney crucially kicked both the conversions to give Penryn/Perran side a 26 - 7 lead at the halftime break.

Redruth now playing with the gale force wind at their backs were determined to get back in to the match. The Reds scored two tries in quick succession, one of which was converted to make the score 26 - 19 with 15 minutes remaining.

Redruth pounded at the Penryn tryline with the time running out but strong defence held them out until two minutes from time when Redruth eventually went over for a try. The conversion would bring the scores level but crucialy the difficult kick went wide.

The last minute of the match again Redruth went for the winning try but excellent defence kept them out and Penryn/Perran celebrated at the final whistle.

This was an excellent match and both sides must be given credit for putting on an entertaining and tense match in awful conditions.

Penryn/Perran extend their winning run and remain top of the table.
