Freddie Williams hit his second hat-trick in three games as Porthleven thrashed CSWPL premier division side Penzance 4-0 in the Dave Gardner Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
Penzance went into the match having had a torrid summer. Following the departure of manager Gary Marks at the end of last season, the Magpies have lost a number of first team players.
New coach Robin Watt has been given the unenviable task of trying to rebuild the team. However, due to a shortage of players they were unable to fulfill their first fixture of this tournament, at home to Helston, and then lost 9-1 away at Falmouth in the second game.
Alarm bells will not have been silenced by this defeat either. Port themselves have struggled with a number of first team departures from the club. However despite that, and the fact that they play in the league below Penzance, Port were far too good for Magpies. As a result Watt will know he needs drastic improvements if his team are going to avoid heavy defeats come the start of the CSWPL campaign next weekend.
The first half started very slowly. Port enjoyed the better territory, but failed in their final ball.
It was a rather fortunate 30-yard speculative drive from Darren Robinson that opened the scoring. His shot should have been comfortably pushed over his crossbar by the Penzance keeper, but instead the young shot-stopper let the effort slip through his grasp and into the net.
Early in the second half Dan Greet played a clever through-ball for Williams to toe-poke an effort past the on-rushing keeper to make it 2-0.
From there Port took control. Full back Jowan Shainberg linked up well with substitute Kyle Fraser down the left, before delivering an excellent for Williams to grab his second.
Shainberg, who has returned to Port this summer following a spell at Wendron, then continued his excellent display by delivering another inch perfect cross for Williams to hit a first time volley past the Penzance keeper to make it 4-0.
