Porthleven got their Carlsberg SW Peninsula League division one west season off to a winning start as they beat Vospers Oak Villa at home.
Following a difficult summer for John Dent's side, few would have predicted that Port would have got off to a winning start against a team that last season finished in the top five places.#
However the Fishermen, who named a young starting line-up, more than deserved their victory. Freddie Williams, who has impressed in pre-season, should have put them in front inside the first minute, but chipped the ball wide of the mark with only keeper Ben Hardy to beat.
Port continued to create chances in the first half, with Chris Morris and Luke Hunter both spurning good opportunities. However, in the 41st minute Port got the breakthrough as Matt Dawson crossed for Morris to send a near post header past Hardy.
Porthleven goalkeeper Tom Collins then produced a couple of good stops to deny Vospers at the start of the second half. However, it was Port who should have gone further in front when Morris chipped the ball past Hardy and into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the midfielder though his effort was ruled out by the linesman's flag.
Porthleven: Tom Collins, Robbie Robinson, Chris Morris, Jowan Shainberg, Dominic Batchelor, Matt Dawson, Darren Robertson, Luke Hunter, Fred Williams, Dan Greet, Kyle Fraiser. Substitutes: Nathan Roberts, Jevan Nolan, Gary Richards, Sam Freeman.
