Dale Band scored two first half goals as Penryn Athletic beat local rivals Porthleven at a rain soaked Kernick on Monday.
Porthleven went into the match on the back of turbulent weekend, which saw manager John Dent leave the club the night before they were beaten 5-0 away at Godolphin on Saturday.
They travelled to Penryn with just 13 players. Full-back Jowan Shainberg was also not fully fit having been ill the night before. The game didn’t start well for the Fishermen as they fell behind in the second minute.
Pat Shaughnessy created the goal, firing a shot in from angle that was spilt by Port keeper Tom Collins. Ryan Chinn kept the move alive by knocking a pass back to Band who fired home from eight yards out.
It was 2-0 on 14 minutes as Shaughnessy got to the byline on the right and fired a low cross into the area. It was blocked by Darren Robertson, but he failed to clear the danger and Band swept home the loose ball from close range.
Shaughnessy then caused more problems for Port eight minutes before half time as he took on two players down the left before firing a shot across Collins and into the far corner of the goal.
Then on the stroke of half-time Tom Annear sent another ball in from the left, which eluded all the players in the area and nestled into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Four-nil down at half-time it looked as though it was going to be a long afternoon for Port. However, caretaker manager Daryll Hunter re-shuffled his team’s formation and sent them out to ‘win’ the second half.
And to their credit Port showed determination after the break.
Shaughnessy flashed an early effort over the top of the visitors crossbar, but from then on it was the Fishermen who threatened.
First Dan Greet sent an effort narrowly wide of Rob Rosevear’s goal and then Freddy Williams turned and shot just off target.
Port then got the goal their second half performance deserved, when Williams robbed Annear of possession in the fullback area slipped a through-ball into the path of Matt Dawson> The Port striker kept his cool to hit a right-foot shot past Rosevear to add some respectability to the scoreline.
The only other game in the division one (west) on Saturday saw Helston Athletic draw 2-2 away at Hayle.
