Race Director, Walter Amos, and Carrick fleet Principle Race Officer, Henry Roberts, took the prudent decision on Wednesday to abandon racing for the traditional boats in the Carrick fleet.
Gusts of up to 35 knots were being recorded by the committee boat and Falmouth Coastguard issued a strong wind warning.
Walter Amos commented, "The decision to abandon was taken early to give the competitors and their families the opportunity to enjoy a day out exploring Falmouth and some of the local places of interest," commented Walter Amos. "Competitors seemed pleased with the promptness of the decision."
The Carrick fleet includes traditional open boats which have been racing in Falmouth Week for 75 to 125 years.
Although there were many capsizes, the dinghy fleet, which started early, managed to complete the day's sailing successfully in the relative shelter of the upper Carrick Roads. The Bay fleet raced normally as it is made up of boats, well suited to the conditions.
