LIKE many people on The Beacon and Old Hill estate, I was horrified to read in the Sunday People newspaper that I own a business on this urban ghetto.

MAY we, through the Packet, thank the kind people who, on Friday night on finding our beloved tom cat, Afton, lying dead in the road, picked him up and laid him beside a nearby wall. They then put a note through my neighbour’s letterbox, describing where to find him, apologising for leaving the cat with her and commiserating on her loss, if she had owned the animal.

HAVING received my free council newspaper I did in fact read it, only to come to the conclusion it did not tell me anything I did not already know. A majority of the content is currently available from other sources. One comment made to the media from a councillor about the paper was that “if other counties can have a council newsletter/magazine, then why shouldn’t Cornwall”. The question then that comes to mind is, if other counties can afford more facilities such as supplying wheelie bins in every area of the county, then why cannot Cornwall? Just because other counties may issue free newsletters/magazines does not justify Cornwall county wasting money that could be better spent elsewhere.

HAVING read Dave Saunby’s (Save the Rec Action Group) letter in last week’s Packet regarding the road widening scheme along Dracaena Avenue, I wholeheartedly agree it would be wonderful to see the recreation ground returned to Falmouth town council. The proposed scheme has three lanes of traffic for only 100 meters of road, why build the third lane at all unless it is eventually intended to provide an entrance for a future housing development on the recreation ground?

AS an old Falmothian, now living in the home counties, I attended the recent Scott May stunt show on the town’s recreation ground while on holiday.

Isn’t it about time there was a return to a form of national service? With youngsters today seeming to be hell bent on trying to kill each other (Packet front page, August 13) and others nicking anything that stays still long enough, something needs to be done and the threat of prison clearly isn’t working.

Many of your readers may not be aware the HMS Ganges Association, now in its 26th year and with nearly 4,000 members world-wide, is looking for all former Ganges trainees, staff and instructors to give everyone the chance to meet up with other like-minded individuals.

I WOULD like to say a great big “thank you” to Falmouth’s walking carnival entrants.

I AM sick and tired of reading discriminatory letters from a small minority of narrow minded people.
