A trader who wants to sell hot food from a trailer on Falmouth’s seafront has run into opposition from town councillors who would rather he opted for his second choice of location in Truro.
Harry Bartlett, of St Day, has applied for a licence, with a pitch on Cliff Road for five days a week during the summer and for three in the winter as his first choice.
The pitch is above Castle Beach and was reserved for another trader who sold ice cream. He has recently surrendered his licence, leaving a vacancy.
At last week’s planning committee meeting, Councillor Diana Merrett said: “I am finding it rather tedious that we are being bombarded by all these vans selling food all the way down our seafront. I think we have too many vans dishing out food willy-nilly.”
Councillor Alan Jewell said: “We should not allow the change – if it’s been ice-cream, it should stay as ice-cream.”
The committee recommended refusing the licence for Falmouth. The final decision lies with Cornwall Council.
