Penryn's cinephiles won't have far to travel for their film fix as a new pop-up brings the magic of the movies to town from this autumn.

The organisers of a pop-up cinema have been given a start-up grant by Penryn Town Council to allow them to show films in the Temperance Hall on the third Thursday of every the month, plus local works and a regular Saturday screening for children.

The project has been set up by Penryn Arts Festival organiser Sarah-Jane Marsden and new town councillor Rich Mitchell, to provide a community cinema to Penryn, with each film to be preceded by locally made shorts and animations.

Sarah-Jane said: “We are thrilled to be able to build on the legacy of the arts festivals and finally have a regular cinema for local people.”

Rich added: “It will be a great place for the whole community to meet up, eat great food and watch good films.”

The first film, to be shown on September 17 at 7.30pm, will be BAFTA 2015 nominated The Lunch Box, where a mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.

Local street food vendor Terry McLintock, of Salvador Thali, will be providing Indian food inspired by the film for the audience to pre-order.

The project will be run as a film club, supported by Cornish organisation CFylm, which provides support to local people interested in setting up and running a cinema club for their community.

This means anyone wishing to watch the films will need to become a member, for a one off cost of £5, which includes entry to the first film, and the organisers are expecting entry to each subsequent film to cost £3 wuth £2 concessions, although this is yet to be confirmed.

There is currently a competition running to name the cinema, and the winner will receive a year's free entry. Suggestions need to be emailed to penrynartsfestival@gmail.com, and anyone looking for information or wanting to join the cinema club should email the same address or post their address and phone number to Penryn Film Club c/o 52 West Street, Penryn, TR10 8ER.
