Families and residents struggling to feed themselves through the pandemic have been handed a lifeline by a community larder that was set up in January this year.

The community larder, which is being run by the CHAOS Group, provides a large selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, pasta, rice, eggs and various tinned goods, free of charge, for those who have found themselves in need during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Dad of six Daniel Hammond is one up to 100 people who visited the larder last week in order to pick up vital food supplies to help his family stay fed.

“The community larder has provided us with a real lifeline, “says Daniel.

“Being able to come here and choose from an amazing range of fresh as well as dried foodstuffs – all free of charge – has made a huge difference to our lives.”

“I cannot thank CHAOS enough for what they are doing.”

Following on from the Feed Cornwall campaign, the community larder, which is based in Malpas, has seen the scheme’s organisers distributing two tonnes of food each week alongside food boxes containing surplus produce from supermarkets and a range of local projects.

CHAOS managing Director Babs Rounsevell is delighted with the success of their Malpas community larder scheme stating the group were also “very grateful to Truro City Council and other partners who helped to get this vital project off the ground.”

“CHAOS gives people access to fresh produce, some of which would otherwise have gone to waste”

Alongside the community larder, the CHAOS team have also been helping to get people back on their feet by referring them to their Positive People team who are employment coaches.

Positive People Cornwall and the CHAOS Group are also taking part in the “Shell Out to Help Out” scheme which is designed to fresh free-range eggs to local communities.

More than 20,000 eggs were donated within the first two weeks of the scheme which was described by Babs as “an amazing community response which has been wonderful to see and be part of.”
