Falmouth MP Sarah Newton has joined rail users and business groups in calling for greater investment in the South West's rail infrastructure.
Rail user organisation Travelwatch South West has recently submitted a paper to the Department of Transport, outlining the thoughts of South West business groups and passenger organisations on the need to enhance railway services across the South West.
The paper, which will be considered as the Department of Transport draws up a new Greater Western rail franchise, calls for an affordable and resilient rail service that will support future growth across the region.
Mrs Newton has written to Railways Minister, Theresa Villiers, stating her support for the recommendations made by the paper, and has requested that its conclusions are closely considered as the futures of rail services in the South West are determined.
Mrs Newton said: “As a regular rail passenger, I am well aware of how important our local train services are and how crucial it is for the South West to have fast and reliable rail links to the rest of the UK.
“The Government has declared its intention to improve the South West's rail links, and the Travelwatch South West Paper contains some helpful suggestions as to how this improvement can be achieved.
“I am pleased to support those suggestions, and will continue to press for improvements to Cornwall's railway infrastructure.”
